so giddy
Had lab on tues, injected DNA into fish and fish embryos to genetically modify fish. yeap, this is how those glowing florescent fishies that came up in the papers some time back is made. of course, because we're only doing this for exposure, all fish at the end of the experiment are or will be killed.
We injected zebrafish embryos with "DNA", but is actually just a dye for us to PRACTICE injecting into the tiny 1mm in diameter egg. the adults on the other hand were anesthetized and jabbed before allowing to recover in the tank, kept alive for the next week or so to be observed later, before they get killed.
i can now write in my resume that i have handled fish. gil can write that she has handled mice. :P

The big "recovery" tank, one tank with a chemical to knock out the fish, and another tank with antibiotics. we just kept transferring the fish about.
They all survived. i did not pierce any to death. tho i descaled 1. :S

I felt the most sorry for this fish. it was the "completed" version that was already showing the effects of the genes (ie; glowing) and is being used as a display for the class to view under a florescent microscope (hence blue light) to see the floresecence produced y the specific tissue parts. pic's Not clear, cuz my phone cam's crap, but there's a fish lying on its side at the rim of the petri dish, covered by a shallow film of water (so shallow, it covers bout half it's body, and only gathers around it. Think a four 50cent coin drops merged together and gathered on the side).
it just flapped helplessly on the side, gasping for air. sigh. sucks man...couldn't they just kill it?
in any case, had a full day till 6.30 pm yesterday, and 6pm today. ultra shacked out, tho i had a nice chill break with gil cat and bebe at MunchMonks.
and i am feeling the beginnings of vertigo (room swirling around me).
think i'll have an early night. another lab day tomorrow, will be killing more animals i think. sighs.
