Meant to post bout this some time ago, but because i still gotta take a shit, get changed, prettify myself and make my way to work, i'll make this short.

I cannot for the life of me understand why SG loves to carry ang moh balls.
In case you havent heard, the education minister has announced that the education ministry is considering the inclusion of Native English Speakers for the teaching work-force.
why? because singaporeans have shitty english.
I swear lor, this stems from our colonial history. Must be ang moh, to speak good english. it's not because of having teachers who were chinese/indian/malay, but it's more because of an education policy of cultivating a bilingual population -
even MM lee himself has conceded (to something of this effect) that his dream of citizens being able to effectively converse English and Mandarin is just that - A dream, Because the ability to switch back and forth between GOOD english and mandarin is not a skill that everyone can acquire, and it certainly isnt easy.
But because the population has been subject to the "you need to score well in english AND chinese in exams or no university for uuuuu", you have everyone with half-fuck language proficiency.
some things to think about
1 - if this is the case, of the standard of the nation's english to be half-fucked, therefore, our teachers were half-fucked, not the system in which english was taught. is it therefore, having the switch from english majors, to include sociology majors being able to teach english from the pri school level therefore...?
2- all ang moh speak good english. and all englishman are understandable. therefore, Top Gear = perfect english programme!!
3 - it doesnt matter if you speak with the right grammer etc, but more imptly, it's the TONE how how you speak. Less coarse, less crude. Speak with an accent - an ang moh one. I've noticed that throughout my life as a student, there are those that
- speak with an accent because they think that accent = good english
- think that those who speak with an accent have good english.
I think most singaporeans speak good english, but just lack the right tone, or rather, adopt a very local tone.
4- it doesnt matter that there are many that i've met in uni, who speak really fucked up english, but, are able to churn out fantastically argumentative and persuasive essays that make them worthy of being awarded the Dean's List position of their co-hort. Ang moh buay pai?
5 - during my parents time, they learnt english via understanding what is a noun, verb, pronoun, adjective etc. I remembered leearning that briefly in primary school but promptly forgot all about it as i got older. I wonder if now, we have started to study english phonetically instead?
in short, language is not because your teachers are local, but more of HOW you pick up the language.
I picked up more bahasa in 4 months, than i did in 15 years. it's the way it was taught. and likewise for english, you gotta read more shit and converse more of the shit! (AND I PROMPTLY forgot bahasa, because, i didnt use it)
besides, when your national newspaper has articles with grammatical and spelling errors and lack of fluidity...
