...Because tis the time for the year's reflection

Listening to Jamiroquai signing "Alright" now, and it's time for my summary of the year gone by.

Academics
I Graduated!

Said goodbye to my dream of becoming a veterinarian (no money, no brains, too bad lo...) and with a, erhmm, passion in biology, joined the Life Sciences course in SG.

Enjoyed the pluses of being in a local uni. Stayed in hall, made friends in hall, and oh well...u know...

So until 2006, i've Fooled around, lazed around, and many a curry puff lunch later, graduated in just 3 years, unable to qualify for honours year. Woe is me! no hons!

Made new friends, made better friends with the old ones. Became less shy, more extroverted. Learnt the shitty things bout not being the brightest bulb in the basket - if there ever was such a saying.

Personal
Much of my personal life this year has been occupied by work. Graduated in June, working since then. I cant remember much about what's been happening before june. Felt good finally getting paid, feels better being able to pay for the things i need - like my phonebill, food, clothes (and SHOES!) and it feels even better to be able to give my mum money.

Ability to handle stress has gone two ways - either the "i can take all kinds of shit after this" or "ugh...stresssss".

I think my first job made me feel like an abused kid - couldnt eat, couldnt sleep, kept crying every night to sleep. My weight dropped to a giddy 42kg. the best feeling ever, submitting my first resignation letter. luckily for me, had supportive family and friends to tide me by, and bm who helped me on my job hunt when it became clear that things are getting out of hand. they had to deal with me when my face clouded over when having to talk about work. I think i started looking abit scary and gaunt for a while.

2 weeks after leaving, i've been told i've been looking much happier, fresher, and glowing!

The worse part about this kinda multi-life event happening is that i kind lost my sense of self along the way. I no longer know if i'm a go-getter, the person that is "in-control", the "problem-solver", meticulous? driven? I can't describe myself with any of these words confidently. maybe in time to come, i can. :)

Finding happiness.

finding peace.

Finally went on the holiday i've been dreaming about for god knows how long - and went with bm too - what a surprise!

Career
I'm not very sure what I want to do with my life. i'm quite happy with my current choice of profession though. (is it even a profession?)

Got my first job, and quit 5 months after. My first boss was a very nice guy - i'm so incredibly fortunate right? he asked me what intentions i have for my future.

I said: i didnt have honours, or masters. neither do i have the money to go to the states to furthur my studies. the only way for me to work my way up is from the bottom. I like lab work, so i gotta start from "here", to gain some credibility to enter a research lab, and start learning from there. and perhaps someday, i'd get my chance to study my masters, and perhaps a pHD? (but who am i kidding. i got too much heini in me for a clear bright pHD brain!)

He's the best first boss anyone could have. asked me to go and study more, go get a masters and a pHD and put things into perspective. encouraged me to go on a path for a brighter future. Even after he left the company, he was worried about my wellbeing with the hellhole that he left me in, and left ever the encouraging support that paved the way to my next job.

when i mailed him the good news that i was moving on to greener pastures, he was overjoyed and replied yet another encouraging email - work hard, and one day a pHD will be mine.

Well, i can only hope. A pHD may not be on the cards for me, but i would always like a job where i can LEARN.

Landed my second job, with an incredibly kind boss who was conned into thinking i'm bright and intelligent, and took me in saying that i'm a young person just trying to get a start at building my career.

So in the career department, i am VERY lucky. i cant stop feeling lucky and incredibly fortunate.
****

what can i say. 2006 has been fanstasic. i've never felt so lucky (dare i say blessed?) ever, and i'm ever grateful, and still hopeful, for even better things to come!

In life, one must Hope. I hope the year's been great for YOU, too.

cheeers, Jo
