Makan: Fisherman's Wharf @ Clarke Quay

The main draw of this place was as follows
1. Gil recommanded it to me before.
2. Its cheapest fish and chips was $6.50.
3. Relatively un-crowded.
4. it's right across the street from the clarke-quay nel station (exit at the Boat Quay exit i think).
Had the fish and chips (dory fillet) for $6.50 today, and it was really quite OK. oily, as all fish and chips are, the batter was pretty tasty and an even brown, and the fish was soft and melted in your mouth.
for $6.50, it's certainly a good deal, because the portions are pretty large and i couldnt finish the chips.
The fish (dory, catfish or others etc - hence the variation in prices) comes with potato-based sides. amongst of which are the usual French Fries, or Chips.
- Choose the chips, it's more happening.
there's a choice of sauces too, one of which was the good ol' Tartar sauce.
Service wise, it's pretty non-existent. It's self service, though like the Cartel chain of restaurents, you make your order (Cash only, so bring money) and they deliver it to you in a basket. However, Staff are aplenty and from my impression, polite and provided the satisfactory service.
Environment is pleasant too. Sufficiently airy, not too hot or stuffy, even with the non-aircon seating. I left the place without smelling like fried food. Tables remind me of study benches, but at a comfortable height with stool seats that are backless so you can't lean back and let your belly hang out. and the wooden plank-top tables makes the place more wharfy like.
If you have a hankering for some fried fish and potatos, this place is worth a try for those on a budget. However, there is no water provided with your meal, and $6.50 does not include any drinks (Soft drinks cost $2 a pop). Choice of drinks range from the usual colas, coffees and teas, and also beer.
Being served on wax paper in a wicker basket, the appearance looks good, but it gets messy working on devouring your fish within a confined space. An improvement can be made, on the choice of paper used to line the baskets. the wax paper is non-absorbant, and the oil can be seen to form a sheen and to some, the taste of oil may be overpowing.
perhaps, rice paper or the sorts that can absorb the oil will reduce the oil taste and enhance the taste of the food itself - or perhaps, doupe us into thinking it's making the meal a little healthier. ;P
