the missing entry

i blogged yesterday, but the entry disappeared. dunch know why! so since i'm wasting the usual one hour of the week waiting for laundry, i might as well blog.

but anyways, went for the interview, and it kinda bombed in my face. i was selected because i was from NOOSE, with a lyfscience deg and a background in the education industry. for once, NOOSE has a plus point. wah!

but

i couldnt think of one word to describe my personality that would make them want to hire me, so the interviewer concluded that i'm a very shy and introverted person, and that "you don't seem to be as confident in person as on the phone" and also, "from your activities *ruffles thru resume* i wouldnt expect you to be like that." He looks at my activities and says "i noticed you've done a lot of business and marketing" and i said yes, and he asks me what is it that i do, and i said "oh i just meet up with prospective clients and build relationships with them and get them to sponsor money for the hall, because the hall relies on their money to run their activities", he replies "you don't seem the type"... pai seh'ded...i said "well, i don't really know why, but clients that have worked with me before asked to work with me again if when they deal with the hall again at a later time. apparently they think i'm quite understanding towards their needs." then he asked if he was a client how can i convince him to invest in my hall etc. I gave the usual 3 min spin and he looks at me and goes "wow."

pauses.

"if you make it to the second round don't forget to tell the vp you're good at fund raising".

"but i don't intend to pursue fund raising and marketing as a career"

"why not?"

"i've been doing it since i was in JC. I think it's time for a change. i've worked in the lab for one sem for an entire module and i enjoyed the experience, and i find lab work interesting so thats where my interest lies...."

during the interview he also said:

" we dont care about your technical skills, because we believe that no matter even if you did honours project, we find that the lab skills still arent enough"

and

"we like NOOSE. we think NOOSE provides us with standard employees...so we support NOOSE, we've already identified the not so good uni...*laughs heartily* but it's not in sg, donch worry".

memory gets fuzzy he keeps talking to me etc etc...
then he asks the funniest thing:

"why are u wearing black?"

"har? *quizzically* it's the only top i had in hall *laughs awkwardly*"

"haha. but why black?"

I wanted to say, because i have no money, whatever i'm wearing now is second hand, so, i just take what i've been given. but then again, why put the interviewer in the spot.

so i said

"i'm fair. black contrasts"

he responds

"so you do care about your appearance"

"?!??!?!"

sorry...think will stop the recount here, feelin abit giddy now.

:|

but what can i say? i'm neither an introvert nor an extrovert. extreme extroverts just have something to hide i feel. i'm just situationally an extrovert, depends on who i'm dealing with and what i'm selling. other times i feel abit shy. yes i'm SHY, see u guys keep laughing at me when i say it. :S I may seem to be a shy person, but look at my history: i still overcome my shyness to get things done. it's like how i am scared of swimming in the sea and yet i joined sea sports.

some how i dont think they'll call me back, he said he was "satisfied" at the end of the interview, but i couldnt tell it from the expression on his face.

and he kinda frowned at my expected pay too. :S

I think i've been lucky to score an interview tho, opportunities like this are hard to come by because of the big competition. But after a rather crummy interview which i failed to impress, a taxi driver who was rushing me back to campus for class insists that " 读 lyfscience 很好马 。。。哪里会不可以找工作做。。。你看那个bye-oh-polis。。。又大又美 。 。 。”

KAOS.

wake up ur idea lah. lyf science doesnt need MANPOWER. everything is automated, the lab can be so big, but how many people works in one lab?

ok my chinese sucks, but i can converse ok. just must get riled up enough first.

so i ask him to think somemore...if i degree considered as "wash test tubes", and then...what bout the ite? they keep painting such a lovely public picture bout lifesciences for one reason, which makes absolute sense as cold as it may seem - if only 5% of the cohort goes for gold (ie, masters pHD research people), then by increasing the intake, u're numerically increasing the pool of researchers in sg which is good because we need the researchers more than their minions (havent you heard how dip/BScs are cheap and dispensible labour?!?!). tho i wonder, how many of these researchers are singaporean and how many stay after completing their bond. with a large proportion of scholars and graduate students coming from foreign lands, the local talent that is tied to the country by family, seek opportunities elsewhere.

so why did i study lyfscience? because i liked bio, and my jc combination kinda shuttled me to lyfsciences, because the alternative was chemistry which i find terribly boring, and i made the decision when i was a fresh 18 year old who didnt know that things would be so bad. anyway pt is, its too much work for a general degree. i feel so sians to write my lab reports now. i wouldve scored better in arts, enjoy a 3 day week, and still have a general degree.

(Dan : don't say arts students got readings ok, we got longer contact hours (lec up to twice a week for some modules, labs for 4-6 hours) and have lab reports (depending on the modules taken, this sem i have two lab report required modules. my first year first sem i was writing 3 lab reports) AND have readings too - except i dont read them cuz i is lousy student, not deans lister who live in library! BOO!!! pooo!!!! EHEHEHEHE)

sigh, wheres my sugar daddy. send me to au to study vet pls?

do you want to believe?
