Pharmaco Lecturer says:

"Guanethidine and bretylium are adrenernic neurone blockers that are taken up and accumulated in nerve terminals, and somehow prevents exocytosis of vesicles (hence preventing release of noradrenaline) preventing neural stimulation and thus may have a role in some local anaesthetic action.

However those drugs are no longer used clinically because of the servere side effects - postural hypertension, whereby standing up suddenly causes blood to pull at feet causing fainting spells. other side effects include diarrhoea, nasal congestion, and failure of ejeculation.

People don't really mind the fainting. It was the last side effect that killed the drug."
