Makan: Beef Kway Tiao (Food Republic Wisma Atria)

Yesterday I enjoyed a hot bown of beef-kway tiao-dry from Wah Eng (hahaha...depending on pronounciation, sounds like "i'm free" eh) Beef Noodles in the relatively new food court above wisma atria, the food republic. The theme from this food court, staged to be like "early singapore" a-la samsui women time, is certainly endearing. Right down to the costumes and the faux push carts - staged authenticity, man. As you dined, you nodded your head in time with the tunes of Elvis Presley (Fools Rush in etc) and Itsy Weeny Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. I found myself commenting - "Hey this is a CHA-CHA and that is a Rhumba", and giving my singing muppet impression.

But back to the beef noodles.

Man-ning the store, it seems to be, are always the same two young ladies. The really pretty girl i bought my noodles from spoke english really well, and carried herself even better. We sat and ate opposite her store and kept commenting how pretty she is! Hee.

Ok back to the beef noodles again,

Flavour wise, it's not very memorable as far as food-court beef noodles went. But if you always had a problem with the saltiness of beef-noodle sauce in the dried version of the kway tiao, this store's sauce wasnt too salty and just about right. The chilli was pretty spicy, tho could be thicker and more sour for my taste (but that's just me), and the beef was nice and tender, not like the usual rubbery ones from other food courts (or fake meat feeling due to overuse of tenderizers from the stores at kopitiams).

bm had a plate of fried hokkien mee, which tasted really good, and is certainly one of the better dishes there - tho to be fair, we havent exactly eaten from ALL the stores, and i have only tried the thai-food in that location so far. neglected to take pic of the fried hokkien mee tho, but to describe, the presentation was nicely done in the traditional way - on a piece of dried yellow banana leaf tucked with a toothpick.

Taste wise, Fried hokkien mee fared better than the Beef-kway tiao, though the beef kway tiao wasnt THAT bad either.

Pricewise, it's rather steep, which is to be expected being an airconditioned food court in Wisma Atria. my bowl of beef kway tiao, cost about $4.50 (bowl of noodles, slice beef, no beef balls, and a side bowl of soup), a dollar more than beef-kway tiao in food courts in the heartlands.

a cup of teh, and teh peng cost $3, tho the cup of teh came in a glass that was larger than usual.

all in all, it was a pleasant dining experience, the weekday crowd wasnt too crowded and seats were easy to get, the place was clean, the staff was really friendly and seemed quite satisfied with their work. So there's yet another place to eat in orchard road than far east plaza. :)
