Makan Entry: Carl's Junior

After hearing from Gil and Chelle, decided to give Carl's Junior(CJ) a try. With two stores currently, located at Suntec City basement, and Marina Square, CJ is the latest addition to the brand name fastfood choices in Sg.

From the 4pm crowd that occupied every table, I think CJ would do well, and would not be going the way of Taco Bell.


The joint was quite Americanised, and being famous for their monstrous burgers, I wondered to myself if this meant Singaporeans are gonna get BIGGER. hmmm.

A meal, with an upgrade to onion rings (which we did) and a free flow of drink, costs about $12 - which is about the price of TWO Burger King set meals. So we ordered only 1 meal, seeing how Gil and Chelle said the burger can be shared, and requested for my burger to be cut, but the hasseled manager (large crowd mah) asked hurriedly if he can just pass me a knife. So i believe, many people have been requesting this. But not to worry, the knife though plastic, was hard enough to make the cut easily. We were given a number tag, and given a cup to fetch our own drink, and our food was served to us a la Mos burger style. Tissue paper was provided in this American diner looking dispenser available at every table, and chilli sauces and ketchup was offered to you upon serving of food, which the incredibly polite waiter (it was a nice young chirpy girl) would dig about in her apron for.



Gil reccomanded having the fries with some relish stuff available at the drink/condiments station. but we had onion rings, so forgot all about the relish.



The burger was big, but not as monstrous aas they makeit out to be. It's about the size of a good ol' BK whopper i think. But then again, maybe it was what I ordered (bacon double). And as usual, i was too excited to cut up the burger, and was left with this quarter piece (which was what i had. we share....1/4 to 3/4 hehehe) so you go figure out the size youselves.


The burger was served in a rather greasy wrapper (two wraps, one inside half wrapped around the burger already for your convenience) and the sauce tasted a lot like the BK turkey bacon double. Incidentally, I had a minor allergic reaction (rash) similar to what I usually get when I HAVE a BK turkey bacon. So i think they have more or less the same components as preservatives.

The flavor was none too bad actually. I quite enjoyed my 1/4 burger, the bun was soft, and the meat tender. Because i only had a quarter, I had a headstart for the onion rings.



The rings are quite nice, inside, there's really a proper slice of onion inside unlike the crummy processed-mashed up ones usually available. Quite sizable too, though some were the size of a squashed cheezel. The drinks were ok, no coke, only pepsi, and the ice tea SUCKS ASS. Tasted like water. :S

Quite a decent meal though, a lot for one person, though not quite there for sharing with two - though I felt quite full at the end of it. However, the location of both stores in the city hall area dictate that you're only likely to give it a try, or eat there, when u're in the city hall area. So let's see how well carl's will do over the year. All in all, tastes not too bad, but abit too greasy for my liking. Price wise, it's quite steep, but they make up for it with the free flow drink (convenient when sharing, but i don't think this will last very long knowing us sgreans), a huge supply of tissues and choices of condiments, and excellent service.
