...Because it's an odd surprise!
I was up bright an early this sunday morning wondering what to do. project collapsed (yay), so i'm home! no need to work today! butbut....no idea what to do, because i'm up so early no one else is up yet! the house is still so quiet.
on a quiet day yesterday, i watchd the movie adaptation of Jane Austen's "pride and prejudice". my god, the lace and the giggles, and male characters saying "i know how to pick...a good ribbon!" everything's so prim and proper with the manners and courtsies and the thickly veiled sarcasm! depicting the ppl of that time with the costumes and facade - but nothings changed much when it comes to the ladies looking for a man for somewhat economical reasons! (characters in the story pressured to find a husband otherwise they will have no shelter when their father dies as the estate will not be passed to them as they are female. Stressed annot?) sexism aside, you really have to admire how quickly they get married. the guy just shows up at their house and makes an offer like "from the moment i saw you i picked you as a suitable candidate as my wife" and parents excited, sisters jumping around and tah dah...engaged already.
wah piangs!
To put it in our language will be:
guy: want annot?
girl: ok lor
guy: ok! set! Ons!
chopchop curry pop!
but of course to be more singaporean would be
guy: hdb?
girl: ok
guy: ok we go queue....

i realise that ive been making fun of my country increasingly. i blame the ppl i work with. my boss often says "your country sucks". and i cant help but agree, i'm singaporean what. Pessimism is my game!
there's just so many policies in place to socially engineer our society (eg; must be married of 35 to get your own place. so lots of ppl get married because it's "time" and not because they want to.) And the worst part is we singaporeans are so used to it that we often find ourselves calling for MORE restrictions and rules to be placed on OURSELVES. (eg; calls for gov to check hdb corridors to remove clutter in case of fire. alas, some of these clutter is actually good for neighborly bonding, like chairs and bonding in comunity areas. neighbors sit and chat outside each other's home and help each other to water the plants. of course, piles of junk is really just piles of junk)
and now we come to the repealing of 37a (36a? i really cant remember but in short the decriminilization of homosexual sex). i'm often amazed at how ppl constantly write in saying that legalising it will degenerate society.
for the following reasons:
1. gays and homosexual sex has been around for ages and ages and has been made illegal since those ages of ages. It's been around for so long that we have a local term for it in hokkien (ah gua) and in malay (kewei?) and it has become ingrained in our culture.
Since it has always been illegal, why has society these days have yet become so degenerate ANYWAY? (it's the american media i tell you! smack this and on the floor that...ughghghg)
2. homosexuality is not contagious. you cannot catch it from touch or from plain sight. It's a preference the same way some people like sweet things and others like to eat bittergourd. my whole family eats bittergourd. they relish it infront of me all the time, and tell me that it's very good. i've had a bite, didnt like it. You just cant make me eat it. its just not my flavor, no amount of antics with bittergourd infront of me will make me eat it. It just doesnt do it for me.
If anything, degeneration is more likely due to what we are exposed to everyday that we do have a flavor for. Seeing as to how the majority of the population is heterosexual, constant exposure to subject of that flavor is a more likely cause. Just sit infront of the tv, and count how many times per minute the word sex, or something related to sex (bikini model, kissing, sex scenes etc) is shown on tv. It's the media, and also, how so many parents are working too hard to put a roof over the heads of their families when salaries remain the same but inflation is up 4%, leaving their kids alone with the TV with an ipod plugged in their ears and a PSP for companionship. The death of family dinners. over the past week, i've seen countless teenagers aged 13-18 hugging gropping and making out on the train. surprisingly loads of the lower age group, say 13-15 that's having the full on body grope fest. do you remember seeing this happening, or doing it yourself, say, 5 yrs ago?
how can a private affair be blame for the degeneration of society? no idea. i'm very sad.
